During a speech in Parliament on the 11th of November, I urged the Government to introduce stronger safeguards in the forthcoming BBC Charter Review to protect the Corporation’s independence from political interference.

The next BBC Charter Review, due before the current Charter expires in 2027, will set the framework for the BBC’s governance, funding and editorial standards. Myself and other Labour politicians have been calling for a transparent process to protect public service broadcasting and ensure that political patronage plays no part in the Corporation’s leadership or editorial direction.

The BBC is a treasured national asset, whose independence from government is fundamental to public trust. This trust must be safeguarded in the forthcoming Charter Review to ensure the BBC remains free from political interference.

Our local journalists right across the North East work incredibly hard, both in the BBC and more broadly, to bring us news stories that are reported factually and free from bias. After 14 years of Tory cronyism and degradation of our public services, it is vital journalists know that this government stands with them in their efforts to report without fear or favour.
